Program Description

Event Details

The Social Justice Book Club meets on the first Wednesday of the month at Mission Branch Library (Community Room) and online (Zoom) at 6:00 pm. We explore social justice issues through literature and nonfiction while providing a safe place to discuss important topics, share ideas, and inspire critical thinking about equality and justice.

Discussion Norms (from Conversation Café)

Open-mindedness: Listen to and respect all points of view.

Acceptance: Suspend judgment as best you can.

Curiosity: Seek to understand rather than persuade.

Discovery: Question assumptions, look for new insights.

Sincerity: Speak from your heart and personal experience.

Brevity: Go for honesty and depth but don’t go on and on.

A note on content warnings. Topics covered in the books we read for the Social Justice Book Club could have difficult, possibly triggering content. Without being able to warn ahead of time about potential triggers in each book, I ask that you please take the time to check-in with yourself and give yourself the permission to disengage if you are feeling overwhelmed.
