Artist Statement
“When I was asked to provide an artist statement, I have to admit that I had no idea what that meant for me. Am I an artist? Surely not like my sister, whose paintings and portraits adorn many walls in our home. Can I really lump myself into the same category as those I look up to?
Truthfully, I opened ChatGPT for the first time in order to write this. I decided that was almost as disingenuous as the 'art' it generates and just started writing.
I take photos to quiet my mind. To mute the constant stream of human elements competing for my attention. It's something I can do completely alone. It pushes me to be present and truly observe that which surrounds me. In a way it's therapeutic. Much like the ocean and surfing; passions that bring me to many of the settings in my images.
It's fascinating to me, the way I can lose myself trying to capture scenes that people casually walk by each day. And how the most subtle changes in composition or depth can have a profound impact on the feel of a photo. Telling a story through imagery is a fantastic challenge and I grow a little with each release of the shutter.
Photography is not something I do with a specific agenda. It is something I just do. I think that makes it more special.
Maybe that does make me an artist." - Chris Brosan
